Winter Trail Running: How to Layer and Stay Warm

Published on 2023-11-14

The Art of Layering

Running in cold weather requires a delicate balance. You need to stay warm when you start, but avoid overheating and sweating excessively once you get moving. The solution is a strategic layering system.

The Base Layer

The foundation of your system is the base layer. Its primary job is moisture management—pulling sweat away from your skin. Avoid cotton at all costs. Choose synthetic materials or merino wool, which insulates even when wet.

The Mid Layer

The mid layer provides insulation. Depending on the temperature, this could be a light fleece or a specialized running mid-layer. It traps warm air close to your body while allowing moisture to pass through.

The Outer Shell

The outer shell protects you from wind, rain, and snow. A lightweight, breathable windbreaker is often enough for dry, cold days. In wet conditions, a waterproof, breathable jacket with taped seams is essential.

Protecting Extremities

You lose a significant amount of heat from your head and hands. A warm beanie and quality running gloves are crucial. For extreme cold, mittens are warmer than gloves. Don't forget warm, moisture-wicking socks.

Adapting on the Run

Be prepared to adjust your layers during the run. Start out feeling slightly cool. If you get too warm, unzip your jacket or take off your gloves. Don't wait until you are sweating profusely to cool down.
